Invertebrates like worms and insects are essential for healthy soil and ecosystems, but pesticides and habitat loss are causing their numbers to drop. This month, children will learn how composting can turn food waste into rich soil while supporting these important creatures. The main activity will involve creating a composting bin (worm farm) where kids will add organic materials like fruit peels and leaves for worms to break down. As they build and maintain the bin, kids will observe how worms and other decomposers recycle nutrients, keeping the soil healthy for plants. They’ll also learn about reducing food waste at home and how composting supports invertebrate populations. This simple yet impactful activity not only helps the environment but also gives kids a close-up look at the small but mighty creatures working behind the scenes.

The objectives of this program are as follows:

1. Encourage children to engage, explore, experiment, analyze, and experience the process.
2. Encourage children the ability to build and develop their critical thinking skills, where they would need to learn to make decisions and problem solve.
3. Encourage children to appreciate and show respect for the animal.
